todays progress journal entry with Alex Jeffreys
I have continued to strive across the Blogoshpere and comment on blogs outside our student community in order to add value and hopefully in time get noticed.
The approach as has been advised which I like to think I do anyway is to add value to discussions without pimping my stuff, in most cases without even referring to what I am doing.
Whilst doing this I have created a spreadsheet capturing each address date entered comment and the attribute each blog has.
One thing I have noticed is that many of the top rated blogs as rated in Winning the Web out of the 20 I have done so far do not seem to have the conventional option boxes or do much with video which surprises me.
Its been an extra busy day as I have finally got round to getting a new theme sorted out from Studio Press. I’ve gone for the education theme trying not to be the same as anyone else (apologies if I have) and it cost around $60 less the discount. Anyone doing the same make sure you Google a discount code, I think mine came to $53 in the end.
Being an almost total WordPress newbie i didn’t have a clue how to re organise the boxes – what a b****, now I do thanks to Paul Wilson who pointed me in the right direction, I think I owe Paul a beer.
I knew it had to be easy rather than hacking into PHP codes and messing around.
Thats enough for now, I’ll try to stay up for the next session – hasn’t the week come round fast!

Ah, the power of community. Isn’t it great you could just ask one of your fellow students and get them to sort out a problem you had? It’s a lot better than outsourcing this to someone who just doesn’t give a %&#^$* about your blog.
I’ve also helped some fellow students and I always get the feeling that I want to give more than they feel comfortable getting. I’m pretty sure this is universal. So keep asking, someone will always be there to help.
The blog looks great by the way

Thanks Gil
Peter
Nice look and feel to the site.
Enjoy the MWA class.
Kind regards
Mike
Peter,
Love the idea of keeping a log of the sites you have visited & commented on.
That is something I am going to start right now. (Starting with yours!)
Keep you the great work.
To Your Success,
Rob
I didn’t seee the old look, but from what I’m seeing and the comments, the new look is mighty nice. Thanks for the comment on my blog and the suggestions on how to alter the appearance. Not quite sure how to change the font–that is a drawback when you have someone else build the site. I’m sure it’s in the WordPress documentation–just need a few more hours in the day!

Mike
In mine I go into themes and styles (stylesheet.php) – If yours is the same in the PHP file you will see the font size – just change it to what you want and save then all your posts will match that size
Good idea with keeping track of blogs you’ve visited. I’ll subscribe to be notified of new comments to help keep track that way but not all blogs have that option.
Cheers,
Rod
Hi Rod – Its a pain in the RS keeping the spreadsheets updated though………………………

Richard
Same goes for Web Directory, articles sites, forums – if we dont do this its too easy to get lost and forget what you did – not been to Snowdon for a while but can see it out my back window
Andrew
Thanks – Just the header to sort out now and RSS feeds…….. list goes on
Rob, Paul, David
Thanks for your comments – I just dont know how I’m going to get everything done – I think there are many some late nights in store!
Hi Peter,
You’re doing the right thing surfing the blogosphere and also creating a spreadsheet. I’ve done the same. It’s really helpful to have it open and copy and paste your session activity as you go. Next time you open it up, you can pick up exactly where you left off.
Like the theme – good choice.
Keep in touch,
Andrew.
Peter,
Blog’s looking mighty fine…
And you’re right, hacking into php code unless you really know what you’re doing
is a train wreck waiting to happen…
Thank goodness for WordPress and their plug n play architecture.
Cheers,
Rob
Hey Pete,
Thanks for the mention, I’m glad you managed to get things sorted out!
Loving the new look and feel, give me a shout if I can help you any more, I would be happy to
Talk soon,
Paul
